About the Rio Grande Village

A green oasis in the southeast corner of Big Bend National Park, Rio Grande Village is a ribbon of cottonwoods, spring-fed ponds, and river wetlands set against stark desert and the distant Mexican mountains across the Rio Grande. After miles of dry, open country, the sudden shade and water here feel almost startling - and the wildlife responds in kind.

That combination of water, big trees, and desert edge draws an outsized share of the park's birds and other wildlife, making Rio Grande Village one of the richest spots in West Texas for a naturalist with a camera. The nature trail loops over a pond on a boardwalk and climbs a small bluff to an overlook where the river bends below.

That overlook is a classic place to be at day's end, watching the Rio Grande and the desert beyond glow in the last light while the sounds of the wetland rise around you.

A note from behind the lens: dawn along the pond boardwalk and sunset from the overlook bluff are the two magic windows. Let the cottonwoods frame the water, watch for wildlife coming to drink in soft light, and stay for the afterglow over the river.
