About the Yellowbells

Yellowbells, or esperanza, is a Texas native shrub that spends the entire warm season covered in clusters of brilliant yellow trumpet flowers. Hummingbirds and bees work the blooms constantly, and in the Rio Grande Valley the plant flowers practically year-round.

Tough, drought-proof, and showy, it has leapt from the wild rocky slopes of South and West Texas into gardens across the state, where it is sold under the name Esperanza, Spanish for hope.

This flowering shrub was photographed at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission, trumpeting yellow against the summer green.
