About the Snow Goose

An Arctic-nesting goose that pours into Texas by the hundreds of thousands each winter, whitening rice fields and coastal prairies in flocks that lift off with a roar. The species comes in two color morphs - the white morph and the dark "blue goose", once thought to be a separate species - and both often travel in the same flock. Snow Goose numbers have exploded since the mid-1900s, to the point that their grubbing damages Arctic tundra on the breeding grounds. Watching a winter flock swirl down onto a Texas field at dusk remains one of the great waterfowl spectacles on the continent.
