About the Gadwall x Northern Pintail

This is a hybrid - the offspring of a Gadwall and a Northern Pintail, two dabbling ducks that occasionally cross in the wild. Duck hybrids are more frequent than in most bird families because ducks pair up on the wintering grounds among mixed flocks, and this pairing produces a striking, puzzling bird.

The drake shows a blend of both parents: the Gadwall's subtly patterned gray body and black rear end combined with hints of the Pintail's chocolate head, white neck stripe, and long, pointed tail. Birds like this are usually spotted by birders carefully working through a raft of wintering ducks and noticing that one drake matches nothing in the field guide.

The individual photographed here was wintering with the duck flocks at Estero Llano Grande State Park in the Rio Grande Valley in November 2022 - a genuine oddity, and a good example of why it pays to look at every duck on the pond.
