Balmorhea is a green surprise in the West Texas desert, a spring-fed oasis whose wetlands, canals, and lake act like a magnet for birds in an otherwise dry landscape. That rare concentration of water in the Trans-Pecos makes it a reliable migration stopover and a rewarding spot for waterbirds you wouldn't expect out here. The desert light and open water are a beautiful combination for photography.
Birds to look for: Wintering ducks and grebes, shorebirds, gulls, Vermilion Flycatcher, and desert species along the edges.
Best time to visit: Spring and fall migration, and winter for waterfowl.
This is a great spot for some species found in the area. There are a few species like the Sagebrush Sparrow that may be in other places but can be found here to photograph best.
This lake is a very important water source for waterfowl and others. There is a main lake side and a marsh side with a lot of area around both. All of which hold many species.
